Ventura County Democrats Pass Nuclear Power Resolution in Landslide Vote

Friday, July 1st, 2011

San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant

The Ventura County Democratic Party has passed, by an overwhelming majority, a resolution highlighting concerns over the continued construction and operation of nuclear power plants in California.

Entitled Resolution Opposing Nuclear Energy Generation in California, the resolution urges Gov. Brown and the California Legislature to work with the Public Utilities Commission, the NRC, and industry to lay out a plan of action to responsibly phase out nuclear power to protect the economy, the health and safety of Californians, and our environment. It also calls for California energy policy to be focused on conservation, distributed generation, and the development of solar, wind, tidal, biomass conversion, and other forms of clean and renewable energy – all of which will cultivate new business activity and produce ample new jobs.

“This is a bold statement by Ventura County Democrats,” said Bruce Little, Resolutions Committee member and author of the resolution. “Up to now, most resolutions have narrowly focused on the issues of reactor safety and long-term storage of spent nuclear waste. Our resolution covers equally important issues such as diversion of weapon-grade materials, cost overruns and government subsidies, health and environmental problems with the entire nuclear fuel cycle, and the benefits of moving to renewable sources of energy production.”

In passing the resolution, Ventura County Democrats reject the need for nuclear energy generation, which is derived from faulty and inflated projections of consumption based on a profit system hostile to conservation and promoted with inaccurate claims of cost savings, safety, reduction in greenhouse gases, and increased world security.

Ventura Co. Dems Mark Annual Fundraiser at Kennedy Legacy Dinner

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Thousand Oaks entertained a bevy of political luminaries recently as the Sunset Hills Country Club hosted the annual Kennedy Legacy Dinner.  The event marks the kickoff of Ventura County Democratic Party fund raising for the next political cycle, introduction of political candidates and elected officials, and recognition of persons who have made special contributions.

Hannah Beth Jackson, former Assemblywoman, ably handled the duties of master of ceremonies for the evening.  Actor Peter Strauss paid homage to John, Robert and Ted Kennedy by incorporating passages from significant speeches each had given.  The tribute was especially moving as Strauss went into character for each brother.

Featured speakers included Lilly Ledbetter, who inspired the federal Fair Pay Act of 2009, and Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred, who specializes in social justice and gender and minority rights cases.

The dinner concluded with the presentation of the Kennedy Legacy Awards.  “Tonight is really to celebrate the legacy of the Kennedy brothers,” party chairwoman Jill Martinez said.  “Courage and endurance. We really want to recognize people in the community that have those same kinds of traits.”  Allred received the John F. Kennedy Award for Inspiration; Ledbetter received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Courage; Sharon Hillbrant, former chairwoman of the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee, received the Edward M. Kennedy Award for Endurance; and Brian Levy, president of the Simi Valley-Moorpark Democratic Club, received the Kennedy Legacy Award for Community Service.

Planning of the event was under the direction of Sandy Emberland, event chair, and committee members Sue Broidy, Helen Conly, Sandra Kinsler, Steven Brown, Sharon Hillbrant, Brian Leshon, and Ron Suckle.

VC Democratic Party Supports Public Option

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

The Ventura County Democratic Party Central Committee has voted to only support healthcare reform legislation that includes a strong public option.  Here is the text of the resolution:

“WHEREAS, the heath care system of the United States is in crisis, with almost fifty million Americans lacking any health insurance, tens of millions more lacking adequate coverage, and millions more who do have private coverage paying increasingly unaffordable premiums, resulting in inadequate access to care and premature death, illness, or financial ruin for millions of Americans; and

WHEREAS, public polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans want health care reform to offer the choice of a robust public option similar to Medicare in order to, in the words of President Obama, “keep the insurance companies honest,” while co-ops or so-called “triggers” are inadequate in and of themselves to address the health care crisis by creating significant competition for the medical insurance industry; and

WHEREAS, Republicans and their allies in the health insurance industry have organized and funded groups of extremists to disrupt efforts on the part of the Democratic majority and administration to reasonably discuss the issue with the American people, and have demonstrated an utter unwillingness to compromise in any way to pass meaningful health care reform;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee urges Democratic members of Congress to vote for only such healthcare reform proposals as contain at least the choice for a robust public plan at all stages of the legislative process including conference and reconciliation, and encourages Democratic legislators to use any available parliamentary means to pass such reform;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee shall send a copy of this resolution to all members of Congress who represent at least a part of the geographic region of which this Committee is the officially sanctioned body of the Democratic Party.”
