In 2008, Proposition 11 called for the creation of a citizens commission to change the district boundaries for the state assembly and senate. In 2010, Proposition 20 added U.S. Congressional districts to the Citizens Redistricting Commission. Proposition 40 proposes to approve of the current State Senate districts, as redrawn by the citizen’s commission.
Why vote Yes?
While this ballot proposition is no longer supported by its proponents, it is still important to vote on the issue. A “Yes” vote means that the current State Senate districts, as redrawn by the citizens commission, will remain in place.
What if Proposition 40 loses?
If Proposition 40 is defeated, California’s State Senate districts will have to be drawn by “special masters,” who would be appointed by the California Supreme Court.
