William ‘Bill’ Hammaker 1908 – 2010

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Longtime peace advocate and loyal Democrat Bill Hammaker has died at age 102.   It was fitting that his birthday had just been celebrated at the June 3 meeting of the Democratic Club of Camarillo.  Many friends were unknowingly able to say their final farewells and enjoy Bill’s humor one last time before he began his next journey.   Bill will be best remembered for his constant and articulate advocacy for peace and for human rights.

A memorial service will be held for Bill at the Camarillo United Methodist Church, 291 Anacapa Drive, Camarillo, 93010 on Wednesday, June 30 at 3:00pm.

Funded almost entirely by a Republican billionaire.

Proposition 21: VCDP – Yes

Saturday – Walk & Call For John Laird SD 15 June 22 Special Election!

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

THIS SATURDAY – JUNE 19th

Join John Laird and friends in Santa Maria on the final weekend before the June 22nd special election to fill Senate District 15!

We want to make sure our Democratic supporters remember to vote, and we need your help to get them to turn in those ballots or head to the polls. Winning this seat means getting within 1 vote of 2/3rds in the State Senate!

Come at 10am to hear John rally the troops, then we’ll train volunteers and head out to walk precincts and talk to voters.

For those who cannot walk, we will also have phonebanking opportunities.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Bring a friend!

There will be carpools from Santa Barbara and points south, so if you need a ride, Facebook message Hillary Blackerby or email hillary@lairdforsenate.com.

***********************
More info on the 15th District and the race:

The 15th State Senate district, located on California’s Central Coast, running from Saratoga in Santa Clara County through Santa Cruz County, Monterey County, all of San Luis Obispo County, to Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County, has a vacant seat due to the confirmation of Abel Maldonado as Lt. Governor.

Governor Schwarzenegger called the special election for June 22, hoping to confuse voters into not showing up to vote and helping a right-wing Republican win a seat that has a majority Democratic registration, a seat that went to Barack Obama in 2008 by 20 points.

We need to elect John Laird to this seat. John Laird is a Democrat who represented a large portion of the 15th District in the State Assembly, and has a record of standing up for his principles. During my time there, he fought for fair budgets, protection for our environment, investment in education and equality for all Californians.

Ventura County Democratic Party Official Voting Guide – June 8, 2010 Election

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Please distribute this document to your lists of colleagues, friends and family.

The June 8, 2010 Election is upon us, and it is a critical one for Democrats in Ventura County. Ventura is a blue county with 13,000 more Democrats registered than Republicans. But because of low Democratic turnout at the polls — don’t be discouraged by nasty Teabagger rehtoric — there are more Republicans filling the elected seats than Democrats. We must turn out more voters at the polls on Tuesday. Please distribute this document to your own lists of colleagues, friends and family.

On June 8, the seat of Clerk Recorder will be filled. It is imperative that Democrat Jim Dantona be elected to this position so the Democratic majority in the county is properly represented and so another highly-partisan, right-wing, Strickland Republican does not fill this seat.

We also want a Democrat in the run-off for Ventura County Treasurer Tax Collector seat and that is why it is critical that everyone vote for Ed Summers. He is the most qualified and experienced candidate on the ballot with a 27-year financial background and direct work handling the finances for both the counties of Ventura and Santa Barbara, as well as other public agencies.

Below are the endorsements of the California Democratic Party, Ventura County Democratic Party, the Ventura County Democratic Clubs in Ventura, Ojai and Young Democrats and a synopsis of the five Propositions by Dante Atkins Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. These endorsements constitute all those given in this election cycle by chartered, Democratic organizations.

There are a some races for which no endorsements were given. So you will see no recommendations.

Whatever you do, please VOTE!

Prop 15 – Fair Elections – Phone Bank From Home

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Less than one week to go before the June 8th vote for Proposition 15, the California Fair Elections Act – the best chance California has had in a generation to start ending the outrageous amounts of money in politics!

Proposition 15 will get politicians out of the money game, but we need your help to make sure it passes.

The most effective way to persuade voters is through personal conversations. Our personal outreach the key to victory.

Make sure politicians remain accountable to you.

Click here to find phone banks for fair elections. The lobbyist trade group, IGA, is trying hard to defeat Proposition 15. They’re afraid of losing their grip on Sacramento politics if it passes.

But you know that politicians should be accountable to the voters, not big money donors. That’s why we’re asking you to take a small portion of your day and phone bank for fair elections.

A few years ago, the Washington governor’s race was decided by only 134 votes. So your help could literally make the difference between winning and losing.

You can also call voters from home.

Please click here to phone bank from home!

Thanks for all you do.

The Thursday, June 3rd meeting of the Democratic Club of Camarillo will feature a party and tribute for Bill Hammaker’s 102nd birthday.  Bill, former county YMCA Director, and longtime outspoken advocate for peace is widely known as the ‘Professor of Peace.’  His favorite saying is: “God put me on this Earth to accomplish a certain number of things, and right now I’m so far behind, I’ll never die.”  The club extends an open invitation to all Democratic Clubs to join us for the celebration.

Socializing will start at 6:15 pm with a pot luck from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.  Bring a dish to share.  Cake and beverages will be provided by the club.  Our regular business meeting will start at 7:30 pm.  The club meets in the Orchid Building, 816 Camarillo Springs Road, which is located at the Camarillo Springs Exit from the South 101.
